New research shows that unmarried and childfree women are statistically the happiest demographic in society, and 1 in 5 adults today are choosing to be childfree. In the UK, 30% of households were listed as single in 2022 and over half of Brits today aged 25-44 are not in a relationship. So, given this backdrop, why does being single and childfree (whether through choice or circumstance) still come with such stigma attached and a misguided assumption of being less than? Lucy Meggeson believes its time to level the playing field for all the single and childfree people and ask the very important question: what the hell is going on?

Spinsterhood Reimagined is an investigation of sorts, based on Lucys hypothesis that posits the following: being a spinster is an equally valid life path as any other, equal in the good bits and equal in the bad. Being single and not having children is, quite simply, different. It lends itself to different highs and different lows, different joys and different sorrows. It is not a lesser path, but the world still believes that it is.

Using findings from research and interviews with a diverse range of women, this book will investigate both sides of the story the side that is marriage and babies, and the side that is spinsterhood. The investigation will delve into the findings from conversations with a plethora of women including those who are married, those who have children and, of course, those who are both single and childfree, but with an emphasis on the lives of spinsters.

Each chapter dives into a different theme, including finance, travel, joy and fulfilment, sex, career, money, autonomy and home. Lucy will compare and contrast each theme through her conversations with women, as well as using broader research into what it means to be a spinster, both now and throughout history.

Spinsterhood Reimagined ultimately tells a different tale of spinsterhood, one that demonstrates how there is more to being single and childless than meets the eye. It will inspire and empower single and childfree women to make the most of their life as well as release the feelings of shame and lack that have plagued them for too long. It will also assure you that you are not alone, and remind you that you have everything you need within you to live a fabulous life.
