  • About the Author

Award-winning writer David Rose, pictured here underground in Borneo, has been a caver since he was ten. He has pursued this passion in countries including the UK, Ireland, France, Spain, Germany, Mexico and Malaysia. His first book, Beneath the Mountains (Hodder and Stoughton), co-written with Richard Gregson, was an account of deep cave expeditions in which he played a central role 1980 – 86, and won the Tratman Prize for caving literature.

He is also co-author, with Ed Douglas, of Regions of the Heart (Michael Joseph), a biography of the late Alison Hargreaves, killed descending from the summit of K2 in 1995. This was runner-up for the Boardman-Tasker prize for mountain literature and won the Trento Mountain Festival grand prize. Film rights have recently been sold.

In all, Rose is author of seven books, which have been published in territories including the UK, the US, China, France, Germany, Italy, Iceland and Turkey. His four further non-fiction works deal with crime, punishment and justice. Violation (HarperCollins), his  2007 investigation into a miscarriage of justice in a racially-charged Deep South murder case, was shortlisted for the Crime Writers’ Association Golden Dagger.  The Observer called it ‘a dazzlingly reported, supremely elegant book of scholarly confidence’. The Sunday Times said: ‘Violation is about as good a piece of investigative reporting as you’re ever likely to get. It is also beautifully written.’

His 2004 book Guantanamo: The War on Human Rights (Faber & Faber) was described by the late Harold Pinter as ‘a lucid, icy indictment of the US government.’ Writing in The Guardian, Nicholas Lezard commented: ‘You must read it. It’s as simple as that.’

Rose’s 2014 novel, Taking Morgan (Quartet), a thriller set in Oxford, Washington and the Gaza Strip, was widely and favourably reviewed. The Daily Mail said: ‘You can almost taste the dust of the streets, smell the explosions, and feel the fear that grips his female protagonist.’

Rose’s career as an investigative journalist has included stints at The Guardian, The Observer, The Mail on Sunday and Vanity Fair and the website UnHerd.  He has been shortlisted seven times in the British Press Awards, in which he was named Reporter of the Year in 2016 and Feature Writer of the Year three years later. He is a past winner of the One World human rights journalism prize, the Royal Institute of International Affairs David Watt Memorial Prize, and the Bar Council legal reporting award.
