Recent advancements in football data have seismically shifted the landscape of the game, on and off the pitch. Teams now employ reams of analysts who scrutinise each player's every action. The media are offering ever-more advanced analysis on their broadcasts. Fans are beginning to engage with football stats like never before and in whole new ways.

This book acts as the definitive guide for football analysis. xGenius is a game-changer for anyone seeking to advance their understanding of the beautiful game.

What is Expected Goals? The Expected Goals method, otherwise known as 'xG', is the most powerful stat that can be used to analyse football. Put simply, it measures the quality of chances that teams/players are creating and conceding. It forms the basis of Tippett's first book, The Expected Goals Philosophy, which sold over 20,000 copies entirely on Amazon via self-publication.

xG was developed in a niche corner of the online football analytics community. It wasn't long before professional gamblers caught on and began using xG to turn over millions of pounds from the bookmakers. Eventually, a handful of pioneering football clubs caught wind of the metric and began using it across several verticals.

They used it in recruitment, identifying hidden gems in the transfer market. They adapted their style of play in an attempt to create fewer, higher quality chances (which proved more successful at generating goals than taking multiple long-shots). They used it to scout upcoming opponents, as well as analyse their own performances.

Expected Goals has finally been accepted amongst the mainstream football community in recent years.

  • About the Author

James Tippett worked as a football analyst at Smartodds, a betting consultancy which turns over hundreds of millions of pounds each year. The company, founded and run by Brentford FC owner Matthew Benham, uses pioneering analytical methods to win money through football betting. Benham also uses Smartodds' data to recruit players for Brentford, allowing them to consistently sign undervalued prospects. Whilst working at the company, Tippett gained an insight into the unique and revolutionary methods used to gauge team and player performance. The 20-year old was a member of the department responsible for collecting match data, based on the Expected Goals method. Having been through the company's training programme, Tippett states that he will never watch a match of football in the same way ever again. @xGPhilosophy
