A beautifully presented atlas of European butterflies, mapping the occurrence of all 501 species and analysing their distribution and population trends. Through a combination of historical and current distribution maps, as well as analysis of abundance trends, The Butterfly Conservation Atlas of European Butterflies provides an up-to-date assessment of the status of each European butterfly species, including the threat of extinction – vital information when it comes to setting conservation priorities at national, regional and European scales. The comprehensive introduction provides an overview of the history and development of European butterfly recording and monitoring, including methods for collating and analysing data and undertaking Red List assessments, summarises the key butterfly habitats in Europe, and describes the threats that butterflies face and recommends the conservation measures needed to reverse their decline. The main part of the book comprises the species profiles, which are illustrated with photographs of the butterflies in their natural habitat alongside maps demonstrating the current vs historical ranges, and – for poorly recorded species – models of predicted ranges. The accompanying text describes the species’ endemic status, European and global distributions; phenology, life cycle, habitat preferences and main larval hostplants; Red List threat category; and threats and conservation actions needed. By combining the knowledge and experience of key lepidopterists at Butterfly Conservation Europe, including the main authors Martin Warren, Chris van Swaay and Sam Ellis, this is a landmark publication that will present a significant step forward towards securing the future of Europe’s butterflies.
