Steve Spawls was born in London but moved to Kenya when he was four and caught his first chameleon at the age of six. His publications include a recently fully revised field guide to the Reptiles of East Africa, a comprehensive guide to the amphibians and reptiles of north-east Africa, a pocket guide to East African Reptiles and Amphibians, a book on the Amphibians and reptiles of Ethiopia, a recently revised guide to Africa’s dangerous snakes, a book about his adventures in Kenya, a guide book to the amphibians and reptiles of the Maasai Mara National Reserve and a classic guide to Kenya’s Natural History. He has also published several scientific papers on the African herpetofauna. Mark-Oliver Rödel studied biology at Tübingen and Würzburg University and decided to do his diploma and PhD theses on the biology of West African savannah frogs. He has authored and co-authored more than 400 scientific publications, including books on West African savannah frogs, the tadpoles of African amphibians and a field guide to all African amphibians. At present, he is the curator of herpetology at the Natural History Museum in Berlin, where he and his team mainly research the effects of environmental change on species and ecosystems, using amphibians as their main model system.
